Former BAFS volunteer and film aficionado Vince LePlavy picks his favorite films from 2024:
“The end of the year. Halfway through the decade. Quarter of the way through the century. At this pivotal juncture in time, cinema seems to be on a radical upswing. Many of the films featured on this list have startling, subversive, important topics ranging from religion, immigration, political activism and the justice system to organized crime, national divisiveness, cyclical incarceration and toxic beauty standards in Hollywood and the adult film industry. The many actors, directors and crew members involved in all these wondrous films helped pinpoint and emphasize the significance of their weighty themes while managing to entertain and enthrall audiences worldwide. Now more than ever must these stories be told! And although the industry felt the lag of the previous year’s actor’s/writer’s strike in the quantity of films that were produced, the quality never wavered. Here’s to the best of the year!…”
